A recent study by AMERIPEN, the American Institute for Packaging and the Environment, took a close look at all the different methods that local, state, and federal governments use to reduce waste and increase recycling. They analyzed techniques used across the US, Canada, Australia, and Europe. Those techniques included
- Disposal bans
- Mandatory recycling
- Unit-based pricing, or pay-as-you-throw (PAYT)
- Advance recycling/disposal fees
- Container deposits/bottle bills
- Landfill taxes/surcharges
- Extended producer responsibility (EPR) for packaging
The study found that PAYT is extremely effective, and it recommended it as one of the three best approaches to reduce solid waste and increase recycling. It also cites data showing that about 90% of residents approve of PAYT programs after they are put in place.
AMERIPEN’s study also includes a page-long case study specifically on WasteZero, highlighting the dramatic waste reduction and recycling results from eight of our customers in Georgia, Maine, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.
