Portsmouth Posts Highest Waste Diversion Rate in State After 1st year of Pay-As-You-Throw Program
Town reports a 42% increase in overall diversion rate and 47% increase in their recycling rate after first year of program.
Raleigh, NC – April 4,2019 – This February marked the first anniversary for the Town of Portsmouth, RI’s pay-as-you-throw (PAYT) solid waste reduction program. In a recent report from RIRRC, Portsmouth ranked highest in the state in both of the categories the organization uses to measure the success of waste reduction programs in each municipality; mandatory recycling rate, and rate of overall material diversion from landfill.
Portsmouth’s 2018 recycling rate of 52.5% and diversion rate of 56.4% were not only the highest in the state for the year, but also the best numbers the Town has ever posted—eclipsing last year’s numbers by 42% and 47%, respectively. Portsmouth’s Recycling Coordinator, Raymond Antaya, credits their success to the PAYT program saying there’s “No way this would have happened without WasteZero and PAYT.”
