Cunningham serves as WasteZero’s in-house expert on legal and regulatory affairs. He also supports the firm’s consulting efforts when a deeper understanding of laws, regulations or ordinances is required to successfully deliver a project. He has worked with WasteZero since 2013, and he frequently works with municipal and state leaders on issues related to waste reduction.
Prior to his work at WasteZero, Cunningham’s experience included:
- Legal practice in a number of fields related to municipal, state, and federal government contracts and finance.
- Service as a member of the North Carolina Senate, Vice Chairman of Judiciary Committee with focus on environmental and natural resource policy.
- Trustee of the Community College of Davidson and Davie Counties, NC, chair of Gov. Relations and Ethics Compliance
- Judge Advocate in the US Army Reserve (Major) and a veteran of Afghanistan and Iraq, recognized for his military service with awards that include the Bronze Star Medal for innovative work prosecuting contractor fraud and strengthening contractor accountability.
Cunningham earned a BA degree, cum laude in Political Science and Philosophy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a Master’s in Public Policy and Public Administration from the London School of Economics, and a Juris Doctor from the University of North Carolina School of Law.
